Le Loop 2018 - Stage 18: Trie-sur-Baïse to Pau
Watching the pros race to La Rosière in the tour stage yesterday; and hearing about the exclusion of Mark Cavendish for being outside the time limit brought home how tough the Alps and subsequent stages have been... there is nowhere to hide if you get it wrong on the bike- a bike is a two wheeled machine run on human power! Yes the bike needs to work, but the human needs to be maintained and correctly fuelled; simple errors can lead to catastrophic results. This point has been made quite forcibly this week and it has been a simple but hard lesson to learn.
We are all aware of the enormity of tomorrow’s stage and it was present today as we transferred to the start; and even more noticeable as the whole Le Loop peloton rolled out at the ridiculously slow speed of 10km per hour, the day was cloudy and overcast and it was as if everyone was saving energy..... that didn’t last. And I have to say I had a blast; enjoying myself so much that I broke away solo after FS3 and riding the final 35km in a ridiculously quick time and swooping into Pau with a grin from ear to ear!
A massive shout out to Barry who should be really pleased with the way he has ridden these three days; hopefully he’ll return to UK with a deep sense of job done.
And then tomorrow all being well I can think about finally booking a flight home!
