London to Paris - Stage 1
Four go off on a cycling trip!
We waved off four of our team, Barry James, Zoe Lawson, Heather Newton and Joe Black on Tuesday as they embarked on their London to Paris cycling adventure in aid of St Oswalds' Hospice. We're delighted to be able to support them by giving them the time to do this and we asked Barry to send us his thoughts as, together with friends of the firm Lauren and Mike, they make their way towards the Eiffel Tower, Here is his first report.
"So to the morning of the ride, a 4.45am alarm for at a ridiculous 6.15am meet at Crystal Palace. Big thanks to Patrick Dane for the bag transport! We got a bit lost, who would’ve thought the grounds of a palace would be so large? We did a couple of laps of the running track for the craic, met Lauren and Mike, and we were off.
Cycling in London is a bit scary. The drivers are crazy. Fortunately we were quickly out into the rolling roads of South East London and Kent, stopping only to take a photo of the city. We made cracking progress. The only downside being it was much cooler than we expected, but that was soon forgotten as well made our way through the country roads.
An excellent buffet lunch mid-afternoon filled us up for the run into Dover. A couple of small incidents though:
- Barry might’ve led Heather, Zoe and Joe a mile down quite a serious hill.....only to realise his Garmin was playing up and we had to ride back up the serious hill. To be fair, I need the hill training!
- Lauren had a puncture but this was handled with the speedy efficiency to be expected of veterans of Ironman challenges and crazy cycle tours around Europe and Asia!
The great thing about today is that we were able to ride comfortably as a group of 6. The guys have made so much progress in their training, it was no issue to roll along at a decent clip and all have some fun. A swift pint in Dover before the ferry, which in fairness, was the worst bit of the whole day. Sea sickness all round.
A convoy ride to the hotel on the other side and its 98 miles done. A brilliant effort by everyone, not just Team Leathers.
A bit of sun tomorrow please, factor 50 at the ready!"
